San Pablo de los Montes

The municipio of San Pablo de los Montes is located in the Centre and South of the region of the Montes de Toledo, coinciding with the higher elevations of this mountain range. It is located some 50 kilometres from Toledo and accessed taking the road towards CM-401 Navahermosa, after passing through the municipality of Gálvez we deviate by TO-7811 and last Menasalbas we incorporate on the road from San Pablo de Los Montes, TO - 7840-V.

It has a mountainous part formed by peaks and hills with groves on the slopes of umbria jarales and oak on the slopes of solana, and other more plain bottom formed by areas consisted of gall oak, Cork oak and ash with crops and pastures. All of this represents a mosaic of vegetation formations that determine a very varied landscape and natural richness, with ecosystems of high ecological value. This own scenic beauty is enriched by the nearby presence of natural environments such as the Parque Nacional de Cabañeros, pantanos de La Torre of Abraham and the Torcon, Retuerta del Bullaque, dehesa de San Pablo frog or the plateau of the mountains.

The abundant fauna is represented by practically all of the Mediterranean species, including some of great ecological value as imperial Eagle, Golden Eagle, Black Vulture or the Wildcat.

Concerning the history of the municipality, we find traces of past settlements, describing the history of the town in the form of archaeological remains. There are various documented remains which we shall describe: remains of prehistoric times in the form of found stone and bone tools; remains of numerous mines of Roman origin (2nd century B.c.) scattered in the hills; and the most recent of the convent of the Augustinian Fathers built in the 15th century on Visigoths remains of the 7th century, found a kilometer from the municipality.

Already in the town center, characterized as the monteno peoples by its steep streets and irregular tracing, you can visit the Church Parroquial de la Conversión de San Pablo, whose Bell-Tower was used as a former watchtower in the 13th century. Later, in the 16th century, the tower was joined by a top of mudejar style and the rest of the structure to configure the current church.

Other monuments in the municipality are the roundabout of the Plaza de la Constitución, Calvary, Town Hall, built in the year 1904, or building the home of the pensioner, classified as historical monuments.

There are also numerous examples of popular architecture in private houses, fountains, and other buildings that the traveller can contemplate with a pleasant stroll through the curious streets of the town.

Their main means of livelihood is the textile industry and the carpentry, along with livestock. Between the months of October and February hunting, both minor and major, it drives the economy of the municipality.

It highlights the rich local gastronomy, associated with important hunting supply presenting the area with dishes that you can taste the traveller in the wide offer of restaurants that has the municipality and which undoubtedly will delight the most demanding palates.

The municipality boasts a hiking route called "Secretos de Bosques y Cañadas". This autointerpretativa route is signposted and passes through hilly roads where to observe nature in all its splendour with architectural remains of great importance.
